The Impact of Heatwaves

Contrary to expectations, marine heatwaves had minimal impact on individual fish behavior. Feeding activity, refuge use, and escape behavior remained largely unchanged, even during the intense 2023 heatwave. The authors suggest that the cooler edge of the species' range may mitigate the effects of moderate warming.

The Problem of Acidification

However, the reef exposed to both warming and acidification presented a different challenge. Shoals were significantly smaller, with population density dropping sharply. While individual fish behavior remained stable, the social structures that support these behaviors were quietly falling apart. The real issue was habitat structure.

Habitat Loss and Its Consequences

Corals were nearly absent at the acidified reef, and canopy-forming algae had shrunk dramatically. The once-layered and complex environment had become a flat expanse of turf algae. Without shelter and structure, fewer fish settled there, and those that did had fewer opportunities to form large shoals.

This study suggests that climate change may indirectly alter marine behavior. Rather than directly impacting individual fish behavior, climate change first reshapes the habitat, leading to a loss of shelter and structure.
