Local motorist Andy Kerry, who navigates this roundabout regularly, paints a grim picture. He describes it as 'treacherous since Christmas' and claims that accidents are occurring more than once a day. He vividly explains the difficulty of exiting Hardingstone, where drivers must 'jump across four or five lanes of traffic' to reach their destination. Kerry also points out that despite 20mph speed limit signs, the temporary layout has created a 'speedway', with many drivers seemingly ignoring junctions coming off slip roads.
Independent councillor Julie Davenport echoes these worries, stating she continues to receive a steady stream of complaints from residents. She's particularly concerned because the very reason for the extensive improvement works, which began in March last year and are now expected to conclude in spring 2026 (a delay from the original December 2025 completion date), was that the roundabout was 'not fit for purpose'. Councillor Davenport is advocating for more proactive community engagement, suggesting another open evening for residents to voice their concerns directly.
And this is the part most people miss... The WNC, in conjunction with their highways contractor Kier, asserts that they take road safety concerns 'extremely seriously'. They explain that the interchange is currently operating under a temporary layout, which, while challenging, has seen the introduction of additional traffic lanes in December to enhance capacity and traffic flow. However, they reiterate the need for drivers to remain vigilant due to these temporary arrangements. These include a reduced temporary speed limit of 20mph, temporary road markings and signage, and interim layout changes designed to mirror the final scheme. Regular inspections and adjustments are also part of the ongoing process.
The council clarifies that permanent traffic signals cannot be activated until the interchange is in its final configuration. Installing temporary signals now, they argue, would significantly increase delays and introduce further risks. This decision is informed by professional traffic management advice and is kept under constant review.
