There's an intriguing story behind Rassie Erasmus' success with the Springboks, and it all starts with a unique individual.
Springboks legend Percy Montgomery, a key figure in the team's 2007 World Cup victory, has some fascinating insights. He reveals how Erasmus, his former teammate and now a legendary coach, stood out from the crowd.
"There was an aura about Rassie that made you sense his uniqueness," Montgomery shared. "I recall his distinctive fingers and his aversion to fruits, which led to some playful pranks. We'd sneak bananas into his blazer, but despite our light-hearted ribbing, everyone listened when he spoke. He was the team's analyst, a role that set him apart."
The duo's journey together began under Nick Mallett's leadership, where they achieved a record-breaking 17 consecutive Test wins. But it's Erasmus' coaching prowess that has truly left its mark.
"Rassie's impact as a coach is unparalleled. He's masterminded two Rugby World Cup victories, and his ability to transform South African rugby after a challenging period is commendable. I attended his wedding; we were close. He was part of the 2011 coaching team, and his vision and drive were evident even then."
Erasmus' success extends beyond the wins. Montgomery praises his ability to build depth within the team.
"What's impressive is how Rassie and his coaching staff have created a 45-man squad with A, B, and C teams. This depth sets us apart from other nations. We can field a strong team against Wales, and they don't have the same luxury. SA Rugby's professionalism is a key factor in our rapid evolution."
Montgomery's co-host, Juan de Jongh, adds, "It's more like A, A, and A. The next player steps in seamlessly."
"Exactly!" Montgomery agrees. "Look at the Stormers; they're doing it too. Half the team is young, and I'm struggling to keep up with all the new talent. It's a great sign for our rugby future, from schoolboy to national and then the Blitzboks."
So, what do you think? Is Rassie's success a result of his unique approach, or is there more to it? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!
