The producers of The Masked Singer have made a fascinating revelation: they pause the filming right before the dramatic unmaskings, according to host Joel Dommett. This behind-the-scenes insight sheds light on a critical moment in the show: the reveal of the celebrities hidden beneath the elaborate costumes.
In a recent episode of the Please Keep Me Anonymous podcast hosted by Chris and Rosie Ramsey, 40-year-old Dommett shared that this practice is essential for ensuring everything looks perfect. "What happens is, just before the big reveal, we actually stop recording," he explained. "The crew prompts, 'take it off, take it off,' and then they halt the filming to allow the celebrities to touch up their makeup. After that, we resume and go through the reveal again, which is when I get to express surprise about who it is!"
Dommett candidly admitted that there have been numerous instances where he had no clue who the celebrity was until the makeup was done. In fact, he mentioned that during these moments, producers often whisper the names of the revealed stars into his ear. He recalled one particular incident from the show's first season involving a politician. "Everyone was chanting, 'take it off, take it off,' and the producer leaned in to tell me, 'It's Alan Johnson.' My internal reaction was pure confusion—'Who the heck is this?'" This famous reveal happened back in January 2020 when Johnson unmasked as the Pharaoh.
On a more personal note, Joel Dommett shared that he is happily married to model Hannah, and together they have a two-year-old son named Wilde. Excitingly, the couple is also expecting their second child, with Hannah currently six months pregnant.
Interestingly, Wilde is quite taken with The Masked Singer, which led to a rather amusing situation during a shopping trip. Dommett recounted how proud he felt when Wilde insisted on watching the show, but he found himself in an embarrassing predicament when his son began loudly chanting "take it off, take it off" in the middle of a store.
The ongoing seventh series of The Masked Singer UK premiered on ITV and ITVX in early January 2026, featuring notable personalities like The One Show's Alex Jones and rapper Professor Green, both of whom have already been unveiled. Meanwhile, viewers are buzzing with theories regarding the identity of Conkers, with many social media users convinced that Coronation Street star Sam Aston, known for his role as Chesney Brown since he was just 10, is behind the character. One fan expressed on X, "I think Conkers is Sam Aston, who plays Chesney Winter-Brown in #Corrie," while another chimed in with similar thoughts, saying, "Conker - Sam Aston." Additionally, some fans speculate that Richard Fleeshman, who portrayed Craig Harris on Corrie from 2002 to 2006, or even Lee Dennis, another Coronation Street actor, could be the person behind the mask.
